Outdoors Steelhead - Rainbow????

Post by OhioFisher on Mon Mar 24, 2008 7:45 pm

This is late but it's been on my mind. In my NW Ohio post of trout fishing in cold creek... I caught a fish with eggs. I am wondering if its a steelie or rainbow b/c I know they stock bows but not steelies there - so does this mean its a steelhead? Thank You

Without getting into the discussion of the various strains of trout stocked, a steelhead is basicly a rainbow trout that lives part of it's life in a lake or ocean. After they spend some time in the river, they start to lose the chrome steel look and get the rainbow coloration. I've experienced the same thing with brown trout as well as salmon...
