Paint Creek Lake (Highland County) - The north end of the lake was fairly frozen up as of Dec. 8, reports Leon Cole at Cole's Bait and Tackle in Bainbridge. Duck hunters are focusing their attention on the south end where open water remains. Rain predicted for the end of the week of Dec. 8 should help crappie and saugeye fishing prospects below the spillway.

Rocky Fork Lake (Highland County) - Big rafts of ducks and geese hit Rocky just in time for the second split opener on the south zone Dec. 6, reports Leon Cole at Cole's Bait and Tackle. For fishermen, crappies can be caught through the winter around the docks at the restaurant. The best bite is on minnows, but fish can also be caught on tube jigs in black and chartreuse, says Cole. Depths will vary anywhere from 10 to 30 feet.

Great Miami River (Montgomery, Butler, and Hamilton counties) - Any stretch of the Great Miami all the way up to Indian Lake might be a good place to try when most area lakes are freezing over. Try 1/8- to 1/4-ounce jigs tipped with a minnow for saugeyes and sauger. Blade baits, such as Vib-Es, are also popular choices. Switch over the jerkbaits in the late afternoon and into the evening. The recent bite has been best after dark. For catfish, try cut shad - fresh or frozen - fished on the bottom.
Indian Lake (Logan County) - Just before Christmas, anglers were pulling a few bluegills and crappies through thin ice near Long Island. Depending on the weather from one day to the next, anglers are still hitting the Moundwood ramp area for saugeyes. Bite has been inconsistent from one night to the next, and pressure has been relatively heavy. Try jerkbaits in any color.

C.J. Brown Reservoir (Clark County) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on a $1 million project to shore up the dam at this popular southern Ohio walleye fishery. The Corps is replacing the riprap at the dam after years of erosion from freezing and thawing, according to the Springfield News Sun. The project is expected to be completed sometime in January.
