Buckeye Lake (Fairfield, Licking, and Perry counties) - Most of Buckeye was frozen solid, particularly on the east end of the lake, as of Dec. 8, reports Bob Mathie at Bob's Outdoor Supply in Newark. It's not nearly thick enough yet for ice fishing, though, as one unlucky angler found out recently after a cold water rescue. Lake levels are at normal winter pool. Anglers might try any of the creeks running into the lake, particularly the south fork of the Licking River, for saugeyes at this time of year. Duck and goose hunters might try the west end of the lake, where larger rafts of waterfowl usually keep a portion of the lake open.

Alum Creek (Delaware County) - Construction contractors recently removed a lowhead dam on Alum Creek, opening up a new stretch of stream between Academy Park and Wolfe Park. A second lowhead dam near Nelson Park was scheduled to be removed yet this year. The project is being financed by a $280,000 grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. On Alum Creek Reservoir, anglers were catching crappies at the Howard Road access before the freeze up in early December. Fish minnows under a bobber shallow.

Hoover Reservoir (Franklin, Delaware counties) - Given open water, anglers have been catching bass, bluegill, crappies and saugeyes at this 3,272-acre central Ohio reservoir. Successful anglers are throwing light jigs, 1/8- to 1/16- ounce, with tubes in a variety of colors. Try the dam or near the Smothers Road bridge in the morning hours.
